Distance learning – is it for me? This is a decision that depends on many things: on the one hand, your personal life situation and, on the other hand, the subject-specific admission requirements for the degree course you choose. Some degree programs also require special prior knowledge. We have summarized the most important requirements for you below.

Your Situation

I am working. The only time when I can study is after work and at the weekend.

Working and studying at the same time? No problem with distance learning. Our flexible study system allows you to decide for yourself when you can fit your study time into your everyday life.

I don’t have a German higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), but I would still like to start a distance learning course.

You want to go to university but you don’t have a higher education entrance qualification? If you have vocational training and work experience, you can! We have been successfully offering university degrees for vocationally qualified people for several years.

I have obtained my university entrance qualification abroad and would like to study at the FernUniversität.

Thanks to its flexibility in terms of location and time, distance learning is a great option for German students abroad as well as for foreign students. Our International Student Office will tell you which requirements foreign students must fulfill.

Information for prospective international students

I have a disability and/or chronic illness, but I would still like to study.

Our distance learning course is designed in such a way that it can also be completed by people who have disabilities.

We will be happy to advise you!

I am still at school, but would like to do some modules/courses.

With our Study at School program, you can already take your first steps in regular distance learning while still at school. You can take courses and, in some cases, you can also complete them by taking exams or writing assignments.

Admission Requirements

Entry to our bachelor’s programs and our state examination course is possible with a wide range of qualifications. Even if you haven’t graduated (German) high school with a general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), your professional or international qualifications, for example, can also open the door to distance learning.

More information

To enroll in a master’s program, you need to have completed an undergraduate degree (usually a bachelor’s degree). Particularly in the case of consecutive master’s degrees, additional subject-specific knowledge is required so that you can deepen or specialize your knowledge.

More Information

Open Access Studies are open to all inquisitive minds. There are no admission requirements.

(Preliminary) Examination of Eligibility for Studies

Have you already read through the admission requirements but you are still unsure whether your qualifications are sufficient for admission to the distance learning course? The Registrar’s Office will be happy to help you by checking your documents before enrollment begins.
