Studying While Incarcerated
The FernUniversität in Hagen offers inmates the opportunity to study at an academic university, from continuing education to an academic degree, with the aim of teaching, maintaining and promoting skills for gainful employment after release.
You can find further information on the various areas of study at:
- Study Programs
- Information Material on Studying (in German)
- Costs
You will need an Internet-enabled computer to complete the course. If necessary, prospective students should contact the educational service of the respective prison to ensure they have access to a PC with an Internet connection. At the request of the respective prison, the ZDI helpdesk will set up secure and “restricted” Internet access, which can only be used to access the Internet pages of the FernUniversität, thus enabling participation in the course of study.
The exams are usually written in the prison. Participation in on-campus events and examinations is regulated on the basis of the individual conditions of detention.
