Studying While at School

Schoolchildren who are interested in finding out more about studying at the FernUniversität can take part in distance-learning courses while still at school. You can register as an Open Access student even before obtaining your Abitur and select, take and complete modules/courses from the Bachelor’s degree programs. Some of these courses can be completed with a written exam or term paper.

The special feature of the Study at School program is that the schoolchildren are integrated into the regular operation of the distance-learning program: They work on the modules of the regular degree programs and are supervised like all other students.

Open Access Studies

For Whom Do We Recommend the Study at School Program?

  • For high school students seeking orientation when choosing a course of study.
They can try out subjects, gather information to help them make their final choice of what to study, and also get to know how the distance-learning program works.
  • For particularly gifted schoolchildren.
They complete the courses of a Bachelor’s degree program and, in individual cases, are admitted to the program as junior students.

As an Orientation Aid for High School Students Looking to Choose a Course of Study

For your orientation studies, we recommend that you select modules/courses from the first semester. You can even complete the first semester modules by taking examinations that will be credited to you when you start your studies later.
As you will be taking the Open Access Studies parallel to your school education, you should pay attention to the scope of your modules/courses.

After obtaining your general higher education entrance qualification, you can apply for enrollment in the Bachelor’s degree program. You can apply to transfer from being an Open Access student to a regular student with the written re-registration application.

Study Program for Particularly Gifted Schoolchildren

In the Open Access Studies program, you study the course content (modules/courses) provided by the faculty.

Please bear in mind the scope of the modules/courses: Depending on the degree course and your personal time budget, it may make sense to spread your Open Access Studies over several semesters.

Please note that successful completion of the modules/courses alone does not guarantee admission as a junior student. This decision is made by the faculty on a case-by-case basis. Other criteria are also taken into account (e.g., grades for performance, points for assignments or written examinations, number of examination attempts) as well as a positive assessment from your school.

For Bachelor’s programs in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, an additional assessment interview takes place after the module examinations have been passed.

  • You can submit an informal application for admission as a junior student to the examination board of the respective faculty at any time (even outside the enrollment deadlines).

Please send us the following documents:

    1. An informal letter stating your matriculation number and the credits you have earned via Open Access Studies
    2. A letter from your school confirming your special aptitude and granting permission to continue your distance learning program
    3. A declaration of consent from your parents or legal guardians if you are under the age of 18.
  • If the faculty approves your application, you can continue your Bachelor’s degree as a junior student. You are then entitled to take all examinations. However, proof of a valid university entrance qualification is required to issue the degree and the corresponding certificate.

  • After obtaining your general higher education entrance qualification, you can enroll as a full-time or part-time student at any time (even outside the enrollment periods). All the credits you have obtained during your Open Access and junior degree studies will be transferred so that you can obtain your Bachelor’s degree much more quickly.

Admission to Open Access Studies

In both cases, the first step is admission to an Open Access Studies program.

You can apply for admission to Open Access Studies in the winter semester from June 1 to July 31 or in the summer semester from December 1 to January 31. If you are under the age of 18, you will need to get your parents/legal guardian to sign the general consent form.
