Open Access Studies at the FernUniversität in Hagen
Open Access Studies at the FernUniversität in Hagen are much like guest auditor studies at on-campus universities. They are not age-dependent and are open to all interested parties. Open Access students are free to choose courses and modules from the courses offered by the FernUniversität. Some of them can be completed by taking exams or term papers.
Admission requirements
- None
There is no need to provide proof of compliance with admission requirements for Open Access Studies, as you are not enrolled in a degree program and therefore do not obtain a university degree.
When can I register?
- Summer semester: 1 December – 31 January
- Winter semester: 1 June – 31 July

Open Access Studies at the FernUniversität will help you with your personal or professional development. You can select individual modules from the range of courses offered by the FernUniversität and gain specific further qualifications.
...as a taster course
You can test whether a distance learning course meets your expectations and possibilities by studying selected modules from Bachelor’s degree courses at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and completing them by taking examinations.
...to catch up on certain modules
Are you still missing individual modules that you need for admission onto a Master’s program? There are many courses and modules that you can take as part of the Open Access Studies program and you can complete them by taking examinations.
...as a study taster program while still at school
Schoolchildren can get their bearings at the FernUniversität even before graduating high school, test out subjects or even take up a Bachelor’s degree course if they are gifted.
Costs for Open Access Studies
The basic fee for the Open Access Studies program is 60 euros per semester, with a course fee of 11 euros per ECTS. A complete module, which runs for an entire semester, costs between 110 and 165 euros, depending on the course.

- Mathematics/computer science, law, business administration/economics: 110 euros per module
- Humanities/social sciences: 110 to 165 euros per module

The Faculty of Psychology currently does not offer any Open Access courses.
Examinations and Crediting of Performance

Open Access students who meet the requirements for enrollment in a degree program should contact the relevant examination office for recognition of their achievements.

If you are applying for a transfer to a degree program but have exhausted the permissible number of examination attempts in the Open Access Studies program, we strongly recommend that you contact the relevant examination office in advance to clarify whether it is still possible to obtain the university degree.

Are you already enrolled in a degree program at the FernUniversität in Hagen and are interested in studying course material from other degree programs? You can take courses/modules from other subjects as part of your regular studies.
Courses in the Faculty of Psychology cannot be taken in this way.
