Please request a digital notification of insurance status for the FernUniversität in Hagen from your health insurance company in good time before submitting your application (reference number H0001901).
Enrolling in a Degree Program
Application is possible during the following periods:
- Summer semester: 1 December – 31 January
- Winter semester: 1 June – 31 July
Entrance Requirements
To enroll in a master’s program, you need to have completed an undergraduate degree (usually a bachelor’s degree). In the case of consecutive master’s degrees, in particular, additional subject-specific knowledge is required so that you can deepen or specialize your knowledge.
If you have the following qualifications, you can enroll directly in our master’s degree programs.
German qualifications:
- A completed university degree with a standard period of study of at least six semesters at a recognized German university (e.g. bachelor, diploma or Magister degree)
- Proof of subject-specific knowledge for your chosen master’s program. In most cases, the subject-specific knowledge is proven directly with your degree. Some faculties allow students to catch up on any missing skills via Open Access Studies before starting the master’s degree program. You can find detailed information on the subject-specific requirements and, where necessary, catch-up options in the degree program web pages
International qualifications:
- Certificate of a university degree completed abroad with a standard period of study of at least six semesters (e.g. bachelor, diploma or Magister examination certificate)
- Proof of comparable subject-specific knowledge for your selected master’s program
- Proof of German language skills at level C1
Further information on international qualifications can be found on the International Student Office website.
Transition from a Bachelor’s to a Master’s Degree
If you are in the final phase of your bachelor’s degree or are catching up on subject-specific knowledge via Open Access Studies, please take note of our information on the best way to make the transition from a bachelor’s to a master’s degree.
Documents for Enrollment
Start by filling out the enrollment application form online. Then download your application as a PDF file. Now you have two options: Either print it out and submit it together with your other documents by post (or hand them in in person). Or submit them conveniently via our upload portal for digital processing – the choice is yours!
To enroll in a master’s program, we require the following documents from you:
- Your personal application document (the application document is generated after you enter your data online)
- Proof of identity (e.g., a copy of your identity card, passport or residence permit)
- University degree transcript and certificate (e.g. copy of the transcript and certificate of a completed university degree lasting at least six semesters, e.g. bachelor’s, diploma, magister degree)
- Additional evidence, if applicable (if your subject-specific knowledge is not directly derived from your university degree, additional evidence in the form of a transcript of records with ECTS points is helpful)
- Health insurance (e.g., a copy of both sides of your health insurance card or an electronic registration declaration from your health insurance company for student health insurance. Students residing abroad do not need to submit proof of health insurance). More information
Depending on your personal and educational biography, additional documents may become relevant:
- Change of name, if applicable (e.g., marriage certificate in the case of a different name on the certificate, if not evident from your identity document)
- Doctoral certificate, if applicable (e.g., copy of your doctoral certificate, if you wish to use your Dr. title during distance learning and this is not evident from your proof of identification)
- Definitively failed examination, if applicable (copy of the notification of a definitively failed examination at a German university)
- General consent for minors, if applicable (written consent of parents or legal guardians. Download PDF)
- SEPA direct debit mandate, if applicable (only if applicant and account holder are not identical. Download PDF)
If your qualifications are from abroad, you will also require the following:
- Translation of your university degree transcript and certificate (translation required if the originals are not in German or English. The accuracy of the translation must be confirmed by a sworn translator. More information)
- Proof of German language skills (copy of a recognized proof of German language skills if your degree was not obtained at a German-speaking institution. More information)
Taking Modules
When you register, you select the modules that you will be studying in the coming semester. As a master’s degree course allows you to specialize in your subject, you will usually be offered a choice in the first semester. If you are transferring from another university, we recommend that you have your previous examinations/modules/seminars recognized before choosing a course.
The curricula for our master’s programs and information on recognition can be found on the faculty websites on the specific degree program web pages. Depending on the degree program, you will study one to two modules worth 15 to 20 ECTS (corresponding to a weekly study load of approx. 20 to 30 hours) per semester in part-time studies and two to three modules worth 30 ECTS (weekly study load approx. 40 hours) per semester in full-time studies.
Costs
The master’s program at Germany’s only state distance learning university is amazingly good value. At a cost of between EUR 240 and 400 for an entire six-month semester, you are investing in your own education and personal development.
