Enrolling for a Bachelor’s Program or State Examination
Are you interested in enrolling at the FernUniversität in Hagen? On this web page we explain the requirements, which documents you need, and also the various methods for submitting your application.
The bachelor’s degree programs at the FernUniversität lead to a first university degree and are therefore referred to as undergraduate degree courses. In addition, the Faculty of Law offers a course of study (“First Legal Examination”) that leads to the first state examination.

Important Note on Health Insurance
Due to legal requirements, full-time and part-time students must provide a digital health insurance certificate in order to enrol in a Bachelor's, State Examination or Master's degree course.
Please request a digital confirmation of your insurance status for the FernUniversität in Hagen from your health insurance company in good time before submitting your application (transmission number H0001901).
Enrolling in a Degree Program
Application is possible during the following periods:
- Summer semester: 1 December – 31 January
- Winter semester: 1 June – 31 July
Entrance Requirements
Entry to our bachelor’s programs and our state examination course is possible with a wide range of qualifications. Even if you haven’t graduated from a (German) high school with a general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), your professional or international qualifications, for example, can also open the door to distance learning.
If you have the following qualifications, you can enroll directly in our bachelor’s degree programs or our state examination program.
School certificates:
- Certificate of general higher education entrance qualification (also called school-leaving certificate)
- Certificate of subject-specific higher education entrance qualification which qualifies you for your chosen course of study and is valid in North Rhine-Westphalia
Note: An (advanced) technical college entrance qualification certificate is not sufficient.
University degrees:
- Certificate of a completed university degree with a standard period of study of at least six semesters (e.g. bachelor or diploma examination certificate)
Professional qualifications:
- Certificate of advanced vocational training (e.g. master craftsman, IHK business administrator)
- Certificate of completion of at least two years of vocational training and details of at least three years of subsequent professional activity
- Certificate confirming a pass grade in the entrance examination for your chosen degree program at the FernUniversität in Hagen
More information on professional qualifications
International qualifications:
- Certificate of a foreign (school, university or vocational) qualification comparable to those mentioned above
- Proof of German language skills at level C1
Documents for Enrollment
Start by filling out the enrollment application form online. Then download your application as a PDF file. Now you have two options: Either print it out and submit it together with your other documents by post (or hand them in in person). Or submit them conveniently via our upload portal for digital processing – the choice is yours!
To enroll in a bachelor’s program or the state examination program, we require the following documents from you:
- Your personal application document (this will be generated by the system after you have entered all your data online)
- Proof of identity (e.g., a copy of your identity card, passport or residence permit)
- University entrance qualification (e.g. copy of your certificate of higher education entrance qualification, relevant subject-specific higher education entrance qualification or degree certificate. Alternatively, certificates of professional qualification, e.g., vocational school certificate and IHK examination certificate)
- Health insurance (e.g., a copy of both sides of your health insurance card or an electronic registration declaration from your health insurance company for student health insurance. Students residing abroad do not need to submit proof of health insurance) Further information

Depending on your personal and educational biography, additional documents may become relevant:
- Change of name, if applicable (e.g., marriage certificate in the case of a different name on the certificate, if not evident from your identity document)
- Doctoral certificate, if applicable (e.g., copy of the doctoral certificate, if you wish to use your Dr. title during distance learning and this is not evident from the proof of identification)
- Definitively failed examination, if applicable (copy of the notification of a definitively failed examination at a German university)
- General consent for minors, if applicable (written consent of parents or legal guardians (download PDF))
- SEPA direct debit mandate, if applicable (only if applicant and account holder are not identical (download PDF))
For international certificates we also require
- Translation of your university entrance qualification (if your university entrance qualification is not in German or English it must be translated into German. The accuracy of the translation must be confirmed by a sworn translator. more information)

Taking Modules
When you register, you select the modules that you will be studying in the coming semester. As a first-year student, you simply take the modules that are scheduled for the first semester according to the curriculum. If you are transferring from another university, we recommend that you have your previous examinations/modules/seminars recognized before enrolling.
The curricula for our bachelor’s programs and information on recognition can be found on the faculty websites on the specific degree program web pages. Depending on the degree program, you will study one to two modules worth 15 to 20 ECTS (corresponding to a weekly study load of approx. 20 to 30 hours) per semester in part-time studies and two to three modules worth 30 ECTS (weekly study load approx. 40 hours) per semester in full-time studies.
Costs
A bachelor’s degree at Germany’s only state distance learning university is highly affordable.
