Taking Modules
As a distance learning student, you don’t attend any lectures at the FernUniversität in Hagen. Depending on the degree program, you will take modules according to the curriculum: this may consist of several courses. Your study materials will be sent to your home by post or you will be given access to virtual documents and courses in good time for the start of your studies.

Taking Courses/Modules
For newly registered students
As a new student, you usually enter your selected courses/modules on your admission application. If you would like to change this after you have registered for your studies, you can do so in your virtual student environment within the above-mentioned deadlines.
For re-registered students
As a student, you usually register for the next semester when you re-register. You can make changes to your existing module assignments in your virtual student environment within the above-mentioned deadlines.
Repetition of Courses/Modules
In the event that you are unable to complete a course or module in the semester in which you applied to take it, for instance, you cannot complete it in time and wish to complete it in a later semester, you have the option of repeating it. If you repeat the course, you will receive access to the current, virtual version of the course/module including the new tasks requirements. The study material in the print version will not be sent again.
Courses/modules can be repeated free of charge for 4 subsequent semesters from the first fee-paying registration.
You should indicate that this is a repetition by checking the appropriate box in the column “WHK” (= Wiederholerkennzeichen/repeater code) in the online application or in the re-registration application.
Transitional arrangement for students who registered before the winter semester 2021/22:Students who have registered for fee-based courses up to and including the summer semester 2021 can use the free course/module repetition for seven semesters from the fee-based registration as part of a transitional arrangement.
To arrange a free repeat before taking the course, please contact belegung.
Changing Courses/Modules
You can make the following changes in the virtual student environment under the “Belegung” menu:
Retaking courses/modules
You will not be granted any extended processing deadlines if you rebook courses/modules. Depending on the time of the subsequent retake, the time available for completion may be considerably shorter.
To clarify whether you have already missed any relevant deadlines or what consequences this may have (e.g., admission to exams), please contact the relevant teaching department.
Changing or canceling courses/modules
You can cancel courses/modules you have already taken in the virtual student environment until the end of February for the summer semester and until the end of August for the winter semester. If it is no longer possible to cancel a course in the virtual student environment because the fee has already been paid, you can request the cancellation by e-mail to belegung. This reduces the fee. You can display your current account status via the virtual student environment.
