Frequently Asked Questions About De-registration (FAQs)
Do you still have questions about de-registration? Don’t worry – we’re here to help.
You can find short and concise answers to the most common questions here under the respective keyword.
General
-
No, you cannot backdate your de-registration. We can only de-register you from the time we receive your request (at the earliest).
If you send your application by e-mail, the send date of your e-mail applies. If you send your application by post, the date we receive it is decisive. If the date of dispatch or receipt falls on the last day of the semester, you will be de-registered on the last day of the semester.
-
You can de-register immediately, at the end of the current semester or at the end of the semester in which you have already (re)registered. Please select your preferred option in your application. If you wish to de-register at a specific future date in the current semester, you can also indicate this in handwriting in your application.
-
Once you have been successfully de-registered, you can download your confirmation from studyPORT. You will also receive your certificate of enrollment and the certificate according to §9 BAföG (form 2) in the campus website. If you do not have access to the campus website or require a different certificate, please contact the Registrar’s Office at bescheinigung.
-
You can also apply for de-registration at a later date using the de-registration application. For example, at the end of the current semester or the semester that you have already re-registered for. Once you have submitted your application it will be processed by the Registrar’s Office and you will be de-registered for the specified (later) date. You will receive a confirmation of your de-registration by post a few days after you have been de-registered.
-
After receiving your certificate confirming that you have successfully completed your degree program, you will be de-registered at the end of the current semester, unless your ongoing higher education requires continued enrollment (§ 51 para. 2 HG NRW).
-
The date of de-registration and the reason for de-registration are both listed on the de-registration certificate.
-
No. If you have already completed all the required courses, coursework and exams, you do not need to re-register. You do not need to be enrolled while waiting for work to be graded and for your degree documents to be issued. You can therefore apply for de-registration.
-
If you have completed all your coursework, it is not necessary to re-register for an “empty” semester. If you fail an examination, you can also apply for late re-registration in the event of hardship outside the re-registration deadlines. Please contact the Registrar’s Office by email.
-
Please contact your examination office for all certificates relating to academic achievements.
-
Yes, you can reapply for enrollment in the same or a different degree program at a later date. As long as you fulfill the currently valid admission requirements and there are no other obstacles, you can re-enroll.
-
You can simply send an informal mail to bescheinigung, stating your name and application number.
-
As soon as we have processed your application for de-registration, we will send you a de-registration certificate by post as well as a certificate of enrollment and a pension certificate. You can then also retrieve these certificates digitally in studyPORT, in the “Study and examination organization” (Studien- und Prüfungsorganisation) section under “Certificates” (Bescheinigungen). If you need any other certificate, please contact bescheinigung.
-
For certain legal reasons, the FernUniversität may be obliged to de-register you. If this is the case, you will be informed in writing of your impending de-registration. Here are some reasons:
- Acquisition of your degree
- Failure to identify your current place of residence
- Non-payment of fees
- Failure to fulfill obligations to the health insurance fund
- Loss of the right to take an examination (definitively failed examination)
- Cheating in the acquisition of examination results
In various cases, you will be de-registered by the university administration. A common reason for this is failure to re-register for the coming semester: Students must always register for the coming semester during the registration period. You will also be de-registered at the end of the current semester once you have received your certificate of successful completion, unless you wish to study something else. However, de-registration can also be a disciplinary measure if fees or health insurance contributions are consistently not paid despite reminders, the student’s place of residence or whereabouts cannot be determined or other violations have occurred. You can find out more about this in the respective legal bases.
Fees
-
De-registration itself is free of charge. Please bear in mind, however, that after de-registration you will still be required to pay any costs you have already incurred. For example, the basic fee is regularly incurred for enrollment, admission, re-registration or leave of absence, document fees are incurred when modules are taken, and so on. Notices of fees may be issued in individual cases even after de-registration and must be paid.
