Our psychological counseling is tailored to students’ needs.

During their studies, many students experience difficult phases in their personal lives or acute stress and crisis situations that they cannot overcome on their own.

The BARMER medical report (2018) revealed that 17% of all students are affected by mental issues at some time or other.

Typical problems faced by students:

  • Anxiety about upcoming exams
  • Anxiety about (social) evaluation situations
  • Self-esteem problems and self-doubt
  • General experience of stress or feeling overwhelmed
  • Depression, loss of enjoyment/interest
  • Concentration/attention problems
  • Motivation and drive problems
  • Learning and writing problems
  • Orientation and decision-making problems
  • Procrastination
  • Private and partnership problems
  • Difficulties in social interactions

Our Profile

Our psychological counseling is tailored to the life of students at the FernUniversität and their specific concerns. The aim is to promote students’ personal development and potential and thus also the success of their studies and, at the same time, to prevent (unwanted) drop-outs. We use tried and tested behavioral therapy methods to support our students in a targeted and methodical manner.

Psychological counseling at the FernUni: During the first meeting, we clarify your needs and agree what steps we need to take next.

Our approach in psychological counseling is not primarily focused on assuming that you have an illness but on offering guidance and support to develop solutions for current or long-standing problems.

During the initial meeting, we address your concerns and outline the next steps, which may include additional sessions. We do not offer psychotherapy.

But we can support you by answering questions you might have about starting psychotherapy and help you with your search for a therapy place. We can assess the severity of your mental health problems and provide you with appropriate support during counseling.

It goes without saying that we are committed to maintaining strict confidentiality, ensuring that your concerns are handled with complete discretion. The consultations are free of charge.

  • The psychologist is obliged to maintain confidentiality about all facts entrusted to him/her and made known to him/her in the course of his/her counseling activities (§ 8 Professional Code of Conduct of the PTK NRW), unless the law provides for exceptions or there is a threatened legal interest.

The psychologist’s duty of confidentiality also applies to members of the client’s family and to other third parties (teaching staff, department heads, etc.).

For his/her part, the client undertakes to respect the confidentiality of other patients of whom he/she becomes aware by chance, e.g. through contact in the waiting room.

If you wish, you can release your psychological counselor from their duty of confidentiality, i.e. to provide information to other practitioners or caregivers (doctors, psychotherapists, social workers, etc.). You must sign a separate release of confidentiality for this purpose.
