Master of Laws: Course Content

The Master of Laws is a consecutive law degree program that enables you to deepen your legal knowledge at an academic level. The course includes specialized content in civil law, public law, criminal law, and procedural law. All topics are considered against the background of current case law. Legal history and philosophy of law are also a particular focus of the course. By individually selecting specializations in elective areas, you can incorporate your personal interests directly into your studies and, for example, focus on law or economics.

The course content builds directly on the Bachelor of Laws at the FernUniversität in Hagen. However, the course is also aimed at graduates of comparable law degree programs. The Master of Laws at the FernUniversität in Hagen qualifies you for:

  • a specialized professional activity in a legal working environment,
  • in-depth scientific work at university level,
  • increased social commitment and personal development.

Career Prospects as a Master of Laws

As the holder of a Master of Laws degree, you have demonstrated that you are capable of solving legal problems at a high academic level. Depending on your personal legal background, the Master of Laws opens up various career opportunities for you:

  • Graduates of the First and Second Legal Examination demonstrate a professional specialization through an LL.M. degree. This increases their entry and promotion opportunities in the legal profession as well as in the legal and personnel departments of private companies or public administrations.
  • Graduates of a Bachelor of Laws degree demonstrate a particularly broad spectrum of legal knowledge and specialization by completing an LL.M. degree. This increases their entry and promotion opportunities
    • in middle and senior positions in commercial enterprises or
    • in various areas of public administration; possibly also in the higher civil service (in this case, the respective department must be asked about its procedures).

With a sufficient final grade, the Master of Laws also fulfills the admission requirements for a doctorate.
