Abstract:

The transition of female students from school to university is one of two key periods, where the representation of women in STEM decreases substantially [1]. The reasons for this underrepresentation have been studied extensively, including the absence of female role models [2], biases against the IT industry [3], and stereotypes [4, 5]. As girls often lose interest in STEM fields during their school years [6, 7], it is important to take effective measures as early as possible. While several countries and states have introduced mandatory courses in computer science or related fields, and research has been conducted in this direction (eg,[1];[8];[9]), probably one of the earliest intervention strategies was recently implemented by policymakers at the federal level in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany, by integrating computer science into the mandatory curriculum for every student in fifth and sixth grade (ie, children …
