Remarque's Im Westen nichts Neues has been adapted three times, in 1930, 1979 and 2022. All three films were widely discussed and became cultural events. In this seminar we will discuss not only a general analysis of representations of history in film (using the example of war cinema), but also the cultural shift that occurred to Western societies by the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries. Does the idea of a post-heroic society imply the dominance of pacifist values or is it about delegating violence to technological tools in modern warfare?
