The Promised Land and Its Ghosts: The Literary Space of Belarus in a Transnational Vision (the 1920s - early 1930s)

Flourishing and renaissance or destruction and decline? Writing about the period of the 1920s and early 1930s without using metaphors is difficult, and the most fitting image might be of a ghost—something that is both present and absent at the same time. In the 1920s, universities were established, books were published in various languages, theaters were opened—yet all activities were fully controlled and centralized. The concept of "revival" was forbidden, and "independence" was discussed by the party leadership in a special report.

The project/presentation offers a perspective on the literary landscape of Belarus in the 1920s–1930s beyond the framework of national literary history, through a transnational lens. Thus, the picture of the literary process is not only complemented by non-Belarusian language literature, but also presents the literary trends of the period in a new light.
