[10.09.2024]Bones, Blood and Soil
German colonial archaeology and spatial planning in Eastern Europe during WWII
During World War II, German spatial planners engaged in an uncanny cooperation that brought together a wide range of disciplines, spanning inquiries across historical epochs and geological strata. In the development of the so-called "Generalplan Ost"—a spatial design for the occupied territories in the East—the planners drew on expertise from fields as diverse as agronomy, road construction, water management, archaeology, and prehistory. Furthermore, research into prehistory and early history was elevated to a scientific foundation within the framework of spatial and settlement planning, facilitating the cultural claiming of Eastern European soil for the expansion of German Lebensraum.
Bones, Blood, and Soil focuses on the Reichkommissariat Ost, which included the territories of present-day Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, as well as much of western Belarus. The research project interrogates the history and legacy of the intersection between spatial planning, early historical studies, and the archaeological excavations initiated by the Nazi administration in these regions.
