“Another History of Soviet Belarusian Cinema”
Moderator of the discussion: Dr. Olga Bryukhovetska, Guest scholar, FernUniversität in Hagen.
The book “Another History of Soviet Belarusian Cinema” is written as a series of research essays. Each research narrative was born out of questions posed in the present. What social, cultural, and political processes can Belgoskino films of the period of the NEP and Belarusanization tell us today? Is it possible to consider the Soviet Belarusian cinema as colonial and what meanings does this perspective open and overlap? What political tendencies traces does the image of the “Soviet Belarusian” keep in itself, how was it created, in what forms did it exist after the war and Stalin's death?
“Another history” of Belarusian cinema emerges on the pages of the book by shifting the research focus from the all-Soviet history of cinematography to the national one, searching for its specifics, its unique tendencies, describing the relations between Belarusian and Moscow structures of cinematography governing. All films are considered in the context of socio-political and cultural processes that took place in the BSSR in different periods.
