International Virtual Summer School
Studying and Shaping Goal Representations and Goal Pursuit in Online Learning - An International Virtual Summer School at the School of Psychology at FernUniversität
02 - 06 September 2024
SynergyU: The Summer School for Studying and Shaping Goal Representations and Goal Pursuit in Online Learning
The Psychology program at FernUniversität is dedicated to exploring online learning and self-regulation within significant student populations, employing a combination of self-reports and task completion data across various modules. In our forthcoming virtual summer school, our focus will center on the development and implementation of cross-sectional and longitudinal data acquisition methods about goal representations, goal pursuit, and related facets of self-regulation (such as emotion regulation and self-efficacy) among higher education and distance learners.
The summer school targets primarily master's and doctoral level students, with the possibility of advanced undergraduate participation based on availability. We welcome students from all academic backgrounds. Our summer school initiative aims to cultivate collaboration among scholars, researchers, and students studying developmental regulation and goal pursuit. Throughout the intensive week-long program, esteemed academics will impart contemporary perspectives and methodologies to participants, facilitating an enriched understanding of goal representations and pursuits.
The summer school will focus on the following questions:
- Why is online learning a particularly valuable context for investigating motivational dynamics?
- What types of field experiments can be designed, and what specific data can be gathered from these studies?
- What existing research reveals about the effects of various goal foci on learning outcomes?
- How does goal setting interact with interindividual differences in motivation and behavior?
- In what ways do situational factors, such as feedback, influence goal formation, attainment, and overall learning outcomes in an online education environment?
- How can the analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal data enhance interventions aimed at fostering goal pursuit and self-regulation skills among online learners?
We anticipate that the ensuing discussions on the practical application of acquired knowledge within participants' academic endeavors and future pursuits will enable them to chart their pathways effectively. We are convinced that this platform will afford invaluable opportunities for psychology master's and doctoral candidates to engage in scholarly discourse, exchange insights, and establish meaningful connections with seasoned professionals in the field.
