Lev Nikolaev’s diary stands out among other personal sources of life under Nazi occupation on account of the complexity of self-reflection it offers, and the dramatic twists and turns of its author’s life. The diary documents the stages of the German occupation of Kharkiv in great detail, day by day, revealing not only the Nazi atrocities, and everyday life under the occupation, but also how the author comes to part with the illusions he initially had about the Germans. This research project foresees the exploration, critical annotation, and publication of the wartime diaries of Lev Nikolaev.
