Prof. Dr. Stefan Stürmer has been Professor of Social Psychology at the current Faculty of Psychology at FernUniversität since 2007. After studying psychology at the Universities of Leipzig and Münster, he completed his doctorate at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel in 2000. After a one-year research stay as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Minnesota (USA), he returned to Kiel in 2002, where he held a junior professorship in Applied Social Psychology until 2007.

Research focus

His psychological research focuses on the analysis of group processes and intergroup research as well as in the areas of diversity and distance education. Stürmer is the co-author of a study by the FernUniversität in Hagen on the quality of family law psychology reports, which has attracted nationwide attention, and is head of the psychology certificate program for legal professions at the FernUniversität. Prof. Stürmer was and is significantly involved in numerous projects for the research and further development of teaching, for example the project Diversity Inclusion in media-based distance learning (funded by the state of NRW), TransRegio E-Ass (university consortium DH-NRW) or innovation cluster NOVA. ea (funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education, in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University, TH Köln and the German Institute for Adult Education). Stefan Stürmer was founding dean of the Faculty of Psychology from 2018 to 2021, previously long-time managing director of the Institute of Psychology and deputy chairman of the Senate of FernUniversität from 2016 to 2018. He is a member of the management team of the research focus CATALPA and has been a member of the management of the Zentrum für Lernen und Innovation since 2021. He is currently establishing a cooperation to realize Sustainable Developmental Goals in research and teaching with the University of Namibia. He is an active member of national and international scientific organizations. From 2015 to 2019, he was Chair and Spokesperson of the Social Psychology Section of the German Psychological Society. Since March 2, 2022, Stefan Stürmer has been Prorector for Teaching and Studies at FernUniversität.
