Abstract:

This doctoral thesis investigates long-term engagement and the utilization of information systems within smart cities, with a specific focus on smart mobility systems (SMSs) and the use of gamification elements to sustain user engagement. My research explores the challenges of digital transformation in urban environments, particularly in maintaining long-term citizen participation in smart city initiatives. Through a design science approach, the thesis develops and evaluates design principles tailored to the needs of different commuter types, aiming to enhance user engagement and promote sustainable mobility behaviors. The work is structured around several essays that collectively contribute to understanding how to design effective, engaging and long-lasting SMSs within the broader context of smart cities.
