The 57th HICSS Conference is in the books ! 🌺
[09.01.2024]🏝️ Stefan Smolnik, Katharina Ebner and Christian Anschütz from our team had the privilege of participating in the prestigious HICSS (Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences) Conference, where we presented not one, but two research papers focusing on sustainability in smart cities and gamified smart waste apps.
📚 The first research paper (Persuade Oscar, the Grouch: A Design Approach for a Persuasive Gamified Smart Waste App) provides a first step toward a design theory for smart waste apps that enhances the internal motivation to engage in litter disposal. In our paper, we investigate which design principles should guide SWAs’ design to select an adequate set of persuasive elements in a structured way and, thus, more targeted encourage littering behavior change.

📚 The second paper (Sorting the Trash: How Smart Waste Management Systems Contribute to Sustainable Development in Smart Cities) explored how smart waste management can help improve the waste management services of cities by pursuing strategic goals, including waste reduction, waste collection and transport optimization, and waste treatment optimization. Thus, we shed light on how different systems in the smart waste management context contribute to strategic goals and, thereby, to sustainable development.

🥲 Both papers were first-authored by our PhD student Jobin Strunk who, unfortunately, could not join us at HICSS. We congratulate Jobin for this great achievement! 🥳
🤝 We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in yet another very successful HICSS conference. We thank the organizing committee for this great experience and we wish all participants a save travel home. 🛫
