Prof. Dr. Thomas Ludwig has been Professor for Educational Technologies in Digital Transformation at the FernUniversität in Hagen since the beginning of April 2023. This position is affiliated as a research professorship in the interdisciplinary research center Work - Education - Digitalization. His research interests are primarily in the fields of human-centered technology design, immersive teaching and learning, the design of assistance systems and human-centered artificial intelligence.

Before this, Thomas Ludwig was a junior professor of business informatics, specializing in cyber-physical systems, at the University of Siegen. His research and teaching focused on the design and conception of human-centered cyber-physical systems, their technical development and appropriation by their users in various fields of application. He studied Business Informatics (Dipl.-Wirt.Inf.) at the University of Siegen and the University of Newcastle (Australia) and completed his doctorate on complex information infrastructures and their exploration through mobile and social media (grade: summa cum laude).

From 2016 to 2017, Thomas Ludwig was head of the Internet of Things department, which focused on hardware-related appropriation processes and the use of wearables in complex work practices. Until 2017, he was the office manager of the Mittelstand 4.0-Kompetenzzentrum in Siegen, which aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises going through the process of digitalization. He implemented a number of digitalization projects and helped launch the now well-established Digital Scouts workshop series.

Thomas Ludwig was a research associate at the University of Siegen’s Institute for Information Systems from 2012 and was a member of the Research Training Group Locating Media between 2013 and 2016. While he was there, he worked on and managed a large number of research projects that he acquired himself, such as EMERGENT, in which he coordinated the development of a cross-platform interface for capturing social media, KOKOS (site in German), which involves the development of technical concepts and IT tools to promote cooperation between official authorities and organizations and the population in emergency situations, and EKPLO, which aims to harness the potential of advanced planning and scheduling (APS) systems, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, with special consideration of employees working in order and resource planning.

Thomas Ludwig has published a large number of well-receiived publications in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work. He has also organized a number of international scientific workshops. His work has been awarded several prizes.
