New paper on "Favouritism, social pressure, and gender"

[05.12.2024]

A study by Hendrik Sonnabend (co-authored by Finn Spilker, Christian Deutscher, and Marius Ötting) titled " Favouritism, social pressure, and gender " was published in Oxford Economic Papers. The article is about gender differences in response to social pressure in a professional context. As a lab-in-the-field setting, the authors use data from the fifth division in German football, where both men and women referees officiate. It shows that female referees bow significantly more to social pressure to end the game earlier when the home team leads by one goal than male referees. The difference is particularly visible among young people and is driven by well-attended games.
