Research on energy and the environment is often marked by a high degree of interdisciplinarity. Interdisciplinary projects (such as the Fifth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) often present a significant portion of their information via data graphics. Psychology can help us to better understand and improve the use of data graphics in the field of energy and the environment.
One specific starting point in this respect is the MaxFab project. Wind and sun lead to fluctuations in electricity prices. It is beneficial when energy-intensive production in factories take place when electricity is at its cheapest. Avoiding high peak loads is also relevant when planning the time and sequence of different energy-intensive production steps. Graphics depicting energy price trends and the arrangement of production steps facilitate communication within the company. Unlike tables, the graphs make it easy to visually identify trends and relationships. However, the opportunities and limitations of the various available formats must be determined empirically.
