Guest lecture by Dr Alona Zharova on the topic ‘Recommendation Systems: From Design to Deployment’

[07.04.2025]

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Alona Zharova to our Brownbag seminar. Why are recommendation systems a key to more efficient energy use in households? This question was at the centre of our brownbag seminar.

Dr Zharova presented her latest research on AI-supported recommendation systems that can specifically influence user behaviour in households. Personalised, explainable and data protection-friendly recommendations should make it possible to optimise energy consumption, reduce CO2 emissions and at the same time make everyday life easier for users.

What is particularly exciting is that their approach combines multi-agent systems, context sensitivity and visualisations to make recommendations comprehensible and actionable. This not only optimises individual device usage, but also enables socially embedded activity control - a promising approach for smart homes and smart cities!

Many thanks to Dr Alona Zharova for the inspiring insights into her research!
