Dr. Fernando Moledo

The habilitation project closes a currently existing sensitive gap concerning the history of the concept of "human dignity" and its function both for the legal system and for the (moral) self-understanding of man. The project will begin with a systematization of the concept of human dignity and its use in the Italian Renaissance, and will then examine both late Spanish scholasticism and early natural law thought in all its breadth. For the development on the way to Kant, an emphasis is put on Pufendorf, but also the "absence" of the concept of dignity in Leibniz-Wolff's school philosophy is examined and evaluated. Against the background of the results thus obtained, the Kantian concept of dignity is (re)presented in an evaluated way in its concrete profile.

The 2015 - 2017 project, funded by the Faculty of Philosophy and Philology at the University of Buenos Aires, intended to undertake a comprehensive investigation of the Kantian doctrine of the "fact of pure reason." The questions pursued were: what exactly does - according to Kant - the fact of pure reason consist of? How does the moral fact relate to consciousness and feeling? What role does the doctrine of the fact of pure reason play with respect to the question of justifying the validity of the categorical imperative and, therefore, of the metaphysics of morals? Can the doctrine of the fact of pure reason be reconciled at all with the deduction of the validity of the categorical imperative provided in the Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten?

In the context of the Enlightenment and the corresponding exploration of the claims of human reason, Kant's project of a critique of pure reason addresses the question of the possibility of a metaphysics of nature and morality. However, the results of this project have been causing criticism since the end of the 18th century. The lecture wants to deal with this critical current. In this regard, attention should be drawn to two fundamental problems that point to possible open questions within Kant's critical project. These problems concern the justification of the categories as concepts of understanding of an object in general, which constitute the most general part of metaphysics, and the justification of the absolutely binding nature of the moral law, which constitutes the ground of moral philosophy.
